CW Union Camp Find...Coffee Pot Lid, Snuff Container Lid???

Found right in the middle of a Union Camp we have been hunting. It is not a heavy iron. It is not brass, pewter, aluminum,etc. Possibly tin or metal which has corroded in the ground for 150 years. Oval in shape with a lip that appears to have sealed or covered a container. As soon as my wife saw it (being a big drinker), she said maybe that was one of their coffee pot lids for the camp. Sounded like a really good guess to me. The holes in the metal are not for a purpose but rather from rot. I have included many pictures, weight, inside and outside diameters, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am attaching a link to our hunt of this camp for reference.

I don't have much clue on what it is, it may have went on top of some pressure vessel? I could be off a billion different things though, so I'm not sure, it looks like the shell off of a prehistoric turtle to me lol. Maybe someone can help you with that though.

I could be wrong but there appears to be equally spaced attachment points on rim.If so my guess would be a cap for a rail lamp..

Bigfoot1, you have me thinking. Maybe not a rail lamp specifically but, a lid off an oil lamp for the camp does look to be about that shape and size

I don't see why it can't be what you say it is, it has context of finds from a Union camp..so who knows.

Nola and AARC, The only thing about a grease cap for a wheel hub is that every one that I have ever seen is round, but this is oval. Also the characteristics and the way this is made tells me it doesn't match that application.
