Is anyone sure its Brass?
I would think its heat formed rather
than cast because of the shape. Pretty
complex mold to do that in Brass.
Easy heat bend if its steel or iron.

I just pulled the piece out and scratched a small section. It's shiny gold like brass. It's not iron or steel as there is no rust at all on it.

I don't think it is part of s bit. When you look at it closely it is special, and not some run of the mill hook. It is decorated with straight engrved lines, and as well, the lower hook is flat sided with a shaped end to accept easily a loop.

"Sword hanger? "

MM, I know nothing about these things. As everyone said, it doesn't match the design of the ones people post (usually 1851 design). All I'm pointing out is tht this is a few notches better then a pot hook or harness hook, as it seems deliberately designed with a flat side on the lower hook, engraving, etc.. I suppose there's no reason not to search earlier sword hangers from before this period, or even foreign ones, as there were plenty of old vets fighting during the CW who might have carried their old weapon.

Thanks Johnny.

Size wise how would it fit the pic posted of the briddle hook? It does appear to be very similar.

Spike, while waiting for the size of a bridal hook, I think it's significant that an offest s hook off a bridal is first of all an s hook which mm's example is not. Secondly a bridle hook is permanent, while this one's larger hook is both bent in a way, and has its tip angled in a particular way to easily accept something which can be quickly put on and taken off. (then there is the decoration and flattened metal to consider too on MM's example) (agreed though, there are probably other uses for such a hook than just sword hanger)

The bridal hook in above pic does appear to have somewhat open ends (at least one end). I agree, it wouldn't be a needed/desired function for a bridal hook, however the relic could have been bent. The tipped angle of MM's hook does seem to indicate easy hook/unhook.

Kind of reminds me of another hook posted with unknown function/ID:
