Maybe a scabbard tip/finial. I have found quite a few so it would probably make the most sense for my location.

Now that I think about it I believe the scabbard tips are all brass? Anyway if it's from a cartridge box I'm surprised how many turn up here.
I think I've seen them used on saddle bags to besides the cap/cartridge boxes so I'm sure they had many uses.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

I found one about 5 weeks into detecting and didn't think much about it then or since. But it's a relic.

That's it Buddy(relic), I find it just as much fun now & days learning what I find as much as finding things.Maybe not quite but you know what I mean. Where & when I hunt I can be in the high 90% range that it's something so before long I'll find the answer just takes time sometimes. Even the things that most not care about.
Best To Ya Patch.............
Pete, :hello:

Are there any markings on the handle? Paleoman found a similar handle patent 001855 but we were unable to ID it. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,215193.0.html
Good catch just was going on how it looked from first glance. If it is a handle though would not be lifting much as small as it is & the way it's crimped together on back.Look sorta like suspender pieces I've dug that have the patent date on them. :dontknow: Here's one something like it also I just found.

Iron Patch is correct... it is definitely a bayonet scabbard tip's finial. Specifically, from a US Springfield rifle bayonet's scabbard.

On cartridge-box and cap-box finials, the "knob" of the finial is comparatively shorter, fatter, and blunt-er than a bayonet scabbard tip's finial. Here's a couple of photos of a US Springfield bayonet's scabbard tip, showing that its finial is longer, narrower, and pointer than a cartridge-box/cap-box finial.
