CW Medal?? **Updated pics**

Evening all.

Took my Scouts out to my dig site for the archaeology merit badge today. Deliberately have not detected or sifted in this area of the foundation so that my boys can enjoy finding relics and hopefully good finds. Well they were not disappointed. The first one that came up with a great find is what I would like verification on if possible. I have found Eagle buttons and a GAR belt buckle at this site and knew that there was more to be found. One of the boys was sifting the dirt from his square of dirt and asked me what this item was and when I saw it my reaction made everyone come up wondering what he had found. I believe it is a medal for a CW veteran but looking at images I do not see this exact one. Can someone help ID this so I can show him exactly what he has? The corrosion does not let it show words clearly so any help would be great. I know the pic is not great but it does have 5 "points" out like a star but not exactly star shape. Look close and you will see what I mean.

I don't think it is a medal, most medals have an image and/or incription on the back. That looks to be an emblem of some sort, it looks similar to the VFW, but the rounded "points" are throwing me. If you can gently clean the center portion (not with anything abrasive - maybe soak in olive oil over night and run a tooth brush over it).

Is the damaged section burned/melted?

It has the similar shape of the Legion of Merit medal. The same basic design of the star and balls on the points. I am sure there are other medals close to same .
