CW Find's Today...

Started out the day early and met tymcmurray around 6:30 this morning.Went to one spot that has yielded some Schenkel Shell's for other people, but not us...not toady!!I did end up with a 1977 "new penny" ??? We hit another spot that looked promising but didn't pan out today either, maybe for deer hunting!Pretty much decided to hit the spot where I found the "Star .58" and where his buddy Howard found a bullet and a piece of schrapnel from a cannonball. The field is on both side's of the Hwy so this is the first time I hit this spot.Thank's Ty..Very well appreciated my friend!!Here's what I took home today...

Here's a picture of the field..

Here's a Pic of my second ever "canister" shot...

Next is my 2 piece's of cannonball, probably part of Howard's...Ty pointed out that they were pretty much in-line with Howard's.

I hope this had nothing to do with the schrapnel, but this old button just didn't fall apart...It was about 1 1/4" wide....

Got a couple more piece's but I'll post them in a minute, maybe someone can help me out for an ID.......Thank's for looking....

Well, 6.5mm bullets measure .264. I can't say that I've ever seen a non-jacketed 6.5 though. Can you get a weight and an overall length? I'll start looking through some of my books for a weapon with a hexagonal bore. Excepting Glock of course. ;D

Overall length is right around .56+,can't tell you the weight!!Never seen a round come out like this!

This one may have me stumped. The only hexagonal bored weapon I'm familiar with from that era is the Whitworth rifle but it was .451 caliber and I'm pretty sure the rifling was a twisted hexagon.

Re: CW Find's Today...

The broken button is earlier than the CW.

These pewter or tombac types are cica 1800 (just before or just after).

Re: CW Find's Today...

One of the local doctors here has a flintlock from that era, and when you look at the end of the muzzle it appears to be hexagonal shaped just like your slug, it is because of the way the lands were worked into the barrel to make the slug spin.

Re: CW Find's Today...

I love seeing those CW pieces see the light of day again. I dont care if it is just scrap camp lead. Good job!

Re: CW Find's Today...

Thats how you do it my friend! Comb those fields. That stuff is still hiding in there. That isnt a bad day at all and you got you some shrapnel to boot. That is a tiny piece of shot there. It almost looks like the same size as case shot which was the size of a musketball give or take but was usually made out of lead. Take a look at the pics below....Look familiar??

Mine has obviously been 'pulled' but other than that....looks pretty close. I believe that they have been 'widdled' by a soldier's knife.
