I can't believe nobody responded to this!

Although I have no idea what it is, I can certainly imagine it as a caliper!

It's a cool find, I hope someone here can help you with it...

I'm NO expert on CW artillery, but I don't think they measured fuses for cannons. Didn't they just pour a powder charge into a vent on top of the cannon?

I believe there were projectiles with fuses. But it was not an exact enough science to need a caliper to measure.

If it is a CW period piece, it could be from an army engineer or a wheelwright.

Here's a webpage from the National Park Service (NPS) that lists some of the tools found at a CW era site along the Hudson River. Scroll down (paragraph 31) and you can read that calipers were on the list of tools found there during an archeological dig. Unfortunately, no photos of the calipers were provided with the story.
