It isn't pretty or all to valuable, but the intense history behind this coin is staggering.
Just knowing that a coin found in a area known to be frequented by some of our most prominent leaders and or Foes, can be be almost overwhelming to hold. I have dug a few, but I still get excited when they come out.
The coin would have been handed to a merchant for goods or used as paying the help in the sweltering tobacco fields. To make loose change in those days, the coin was either hand cut, or cut with knife and hammer, creating your change due. I may not find a lot when I go detecting, and as a matter of fact, I dig more nails than anything. Which is alright by me. I find 1700's nails to be a lot like art. Included in my finds are, an old saddle boss, very detailed 1700's or earlier lead merchandise seal, pistol shot, buckles, buttons, and other misc. items.

Thanks for looking.

Awesome cut silver, my friend! I knew you would hit on a nice piece of Colonial-era silver soon. You are putting time in the fields and digging those good and bad signals to get to the Colonial merchandise. :notworthy: I bow to you. :notworthy: When you came home, I bet you had your wonderful wife and beautiful baby daughter waiting for you with open arms. :) Priceless, Mike! :)

Kirk :hello:

Nice finds Mike. Those are some great recoveries. I will call you later tonight with the info you wanted.

Very nice, congrats Mike :icon_thumleft:

Super dig Mike. It sounds like you have the right idea about history. That is what makes this such a fantastic hobby.

All Spanish silver is cool and all I want is one more for the year! No matter what it looks like, as you say, it is what it is.

Congrats on the cut Spanish piece, I love to find the cut ones! From my own experience and what I've seen posted on the forums over the years, it is very unusual to see a portrait style Spanish silver that has been cut. Usually you find the portait types whole and the cut ones are usually from earlier Pillar or Pistareen types. I have only found one portrait type that was cut, and talking to diggers in Virginia that have dug piles of cut pieces, they agree with my theory. Here are my cut ones, all from SW Pennsylvania. Only one out of 13 are portrait, but the majority of my whole ones are portrait type.

More great finds Mike. It's fun to think about how relics and coins came to be where we are lucky enough to find them. Silver was valuable back then. In 15 years, I've only found one cut silver. WTG my friend. I hope the Vols are as lucky tomorrow as you were today. HH, Quindy.
