Customers at garage sale who interferes with your purchase. What to do?

This has happened to me twice when buying jewelry at a yard sale, I was negotiating a price for the whole lot and one of my competitors says to the seller "He is just buying it for the gold that is there" I looked at him and said he knows that already! I then finished the deal. 30 minutes later I seen the same guy at a different sale, I held out my hand and said "my name is Scott, when he shook my hand I did not let go, I gave him the Ironworker death grip hand shake and told him I did not appreciate him trying to break my deal, he replied" I feel you bro, it won't happen again".I then let go of his hand and said have a nice day! Another time a lady blurted out " that isn't costume it is real" luckily I already paid, so I discreetly said "My your own F...... business!" and left it at that. My competition here is fierce!

I would have been very angry. We take a risk when we buy jewelry. I have bought plenty of fake silver, and plenty of jewelry lots that had no gold, silver, or anything worth selling. So do we go get a refund if there is nothing good in it? Of course not. The seller takes a risk and so do we. This is a free market economy. Often sellers know their jewelry might be worth more, but don't want to bother with taking it somewhere to sell.

Wow I would have been so mad, but I will have to say what others have said here- ALWAYS pay for your stuff immediately or if not, then keep it with you while you continue to look around. That was a messed up situation, but I have encountered the rude dealers at sales many times too. I have had to tell one off a time or two who was just obnoxious in his pursuit of looking for things.[/QUOT

I did pay for it - but did not have the exact change. I paid for it and put the box in my purse - waiting for the change. I will certainly carry smaller denominations with me in the future.:icon_thumright:

A couple of years ago, I was at a Church rummage sale and got to the jewelry table. There were four boxes of jewelry and I quickly checked them out to find that it was all junk. Just as I was finishing, a couple came over and the guy grabbed two of the boxes and handed them to his wife, then he grabbed the other two and started looking through them. As he was doing that, he told his wife "don't let anyone look at those boxes until I am done with them". Someone else came up and wanted to see the jewelry and this guy snapped at him, saying "I'm looking at them all first".
A few weeks later, I met this couple at another sale and as soon as the door opened, he went to the cashier's table and asked about jewelry. The cashier handed him a plastic bag full and told him $5 and he paid and they left. I asked her what that was about and her response was that he had called the night before and told them he'd buy all their jewelry, so she bagged it up for him. I told her I would not be returning to their sale again.

What you are describing is the norm.

Happens at almost every sale I go to.

"Early bird gets the worm" or "Only the strong survive" - sort of thing.

Sounds like the kind of crap I deal with routinely in NJ. Just be strong and move along. There is usually enough to go around.

Just remember Karma works in wierd ways sometimes.. She will loose out eventually..

I once had a person jerk the book I wanted to buy right out of my hand...
the seller quoted me...100 dollars...{ a 1790 historians pocket dictionary} an poof...fat hand comes out of nowhere an sucked it right over to her..."I'LL TAKE IT!"
ok..so I walked... this was at the swap meet...so I do the rounds... come back around...an here it that text...same table, same seller...
???OH I say'...that woman changed her mind, is the response..."you can have it for 100.oo" nope..
i walk...
I did the routine for a few hours..each time I went past the sellers table..they wanted 20 dollars less...
but it was rude...an I don't support rude...unless I wanna box...
so when I walk past...{ I started the rounds around 4:30 in the morning...it is well past noon an hot as hades....
the seller sees me wandering past again, and says... "givemetwentydollars"...knowing they are taking that book home...an I thought it was rather rude and crude to watch someone take the book out of my hand an not speak up...
so I get a 1790 pocket dictionary, printed in London...for 20 bucks...
