Dug this button. Picture is not that great - the button actually has pretty good detail but has a small dent at the bottom of the shield. The shank is still attached. It has "C S A" across the top of the shield and "Courtney & Tennent" on the reverse. This was found in an area where confederate troops were known to have passed through and camped on the march from Jackson, MS to Vicksburg, MS just prior to the siege of Vicksburg.
My initial research indicates that this style button was worn by high ranking officials, possibly a general. But I would love to hear more about it if anyone knows, plus what you think it might be worth. I'll try to take a better picture if needed...

The irony is that it was in an area I had detected over before but on the day I found the button I was not even detecting. I was leveling out a patch of ground with a walk-behind dirt mover so I could put in a swing set and I looked down and it was sitting right in front of my shoe. The dirt mover had popped it right to the top. I thought it was a coin at first until I wiped a little dirt off. Imagine my surprise. The swing set got put on hold while I grabbed the detector and looked for more but no luck. Most of the dirt has been washed off but I would be interested in the proper way to clean it further (if that is recommended). I've done some looking around but there are just as many suggestions as there are people asking and I don't want to take a chance messing it up. What is the best way to clean?

Firstly can you do any better macro shots of the front of the button?

I know how I would clean it, but as its a valueable button, you need to take it slow. Like you say, lots of ways to do it, but once its done, it can't be undone! So if you have other similar inexpensive buttons, its worth a few tests. To find to one you are comfortable with & works safely.

Congratz on a beautiful button ..
And as for cleaning IMO, other than water & soft brush method it May be best left as is.
It already shows nice detail & a pretty clear back mark. I looks good to me.
Proceed carefully my friend.
