On a recent hunt we found this button on a Civil War battlefield on the Confederate side near the front of the line of engagement. There is a lot of gilt left and the button is in very good shape. It appears to be a three piece button with the center of the front inset from the face. On the back it says Robinson in a banner with an eagle or bird of some sort. This is in a place that other CSA relics have been found over the last 30 years. I forgot to measure the diameter but it is about the diameter of a nickle. I will get the exact diameter if needed. Does anyone have any info on this button...
Spring will be here soon so an end to cabin fever is coming. Happy hunting everyone.

1834-1848, Pre Civil War, so the button could have been used by anybody but officially just a civilian button. Backmark says R & W Robinson which stood for Richard and Willard Robinson. The produced a variety of military, gilt and sporting buttons. But the mainstay of this company was civilian gilt buttons. This company went bankrupt in 1845-1847 era.

Thanks Don for the info on the button. By the time the battle was fought here (1864) the Confederates were wearing anything they could find!

Yes, but the battlefields were not hermetically sealed before the war, opened up just for the war, and sealed again afterwards. History is laid down in layers and the Civil War was only five years out of the 250 to 450 years of "white" civilization in many areas of the East.

It would be near impossible to prove that button was worn by a soldier.

Might have been a camp follower, though. ;) Look good on a red bodice.

flower buttons were very commonly used on confederate uniforms -- esp toward the end of the war the southern troops used whatever buttons they could get their hands on -- excellent chance it was used during the civil war esp if it was found at a camp site / battle site -- but needless to say impossilble to "prove"it was unless it was attached to a hunk of uniform --- due to its earlier issue and it not being a "offically " issued button typelike the state seal type buttons ---its hard to claim 100% for sure it it as civil war without a doubt ( however if found at a camp or battle site most likely yeh it was -- either way -- its a keeper in my book ) --- me -- I'd jump for joy if I found it.-- Ivan
