So if you use your imagination you can see GW's bust on this crusty button that I dug today. I am not really serious but I do recall seeing a similar button on one of the boards recently that had a bust of GW on it and it was some sort of commemorative button.

This button was dug from a site that had a tavern, jail, and courthouse, on it from the 1780's to 1810. Since that time it has not been anything but woods with very thin population in the area. Any ideas?

Man! Good luck with it! can't wait too see if anyone can ID it for you. That button looks older than GW himself, lol. Kewl find either way, thanks for sharing!

It may be George Washington - there were a lot of different commemorative buttons for him. That pose of the figure reminded me of the Admiral Vernon Porto Bello medals. There were a lot of items issued to propagandize Admiral Vernon's actions. Most famous are the medals but there were buttons etc.. too.

I found an old thread here where a member here dug another Admiral Vernon button and the links brought me to this example which isn't quite the same as your's but you can see the pose similarity...

Also a pic of one of the Vernon medals.

Thanks Bramblefind, that image of Vernon looks like it could be a possibility. Unfortunately my button is too far gone to ever know what it really was. I've dug nearly 100 flat buttons from this same site so its nice to dig something with a little character for a change.

Woah, that's pretty cool. And impressive id work, bramblefind. Looks pretty close to me. Dunno if this helps, but I threw this together for you. Maybe it'll help. Neat find!!

Wow Tony!! The photoshop work is just as impressive as the ID, thanks! Based on the overlay it looks like it could very well be the same button.
