Thats actually a goliath grouper. Used to be called Jewfish. You can tell by the spots on his head and the rounded pectoral fins. They are a protected species and illegal to harvest. I would get rid of that pic if I were you!

Yea, this one is protected... catch and release ~sigh~ The FWC can regulate if you can or can not keep a fish... they have been unable, to date anyhow, regulate which species of fish bites on your bait. The fish are so far very uncooperative with obeying the law...

So... although it is illegal to keep one, it is not illegal to catch one.

But this little guy... into the frying pan!

Actually, it is now illegal to remove a jewfish from the water, even if you release it immediately after. They must be released while in the water.

Would you please quote the specific law... statue number would be nice.

They can be difficult to tell apart sometimes, particularly if your dragging one up through the surf. How would the law apply to that situation?

One of the main differences is the tail, Jewfish have a rounded tail and a Black or Gag grouper have flatter tails. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference when netting a thrashing fish or late at night.

Thanks very much!

I put them out of their misery with a stab to the central nerve. I figure but for the grace of somebody, there go I. I remember years ago LLBean used to sell a fisherman's billy club so the fish would die fast. Personally I have time for people who think it's funny when an animal suffers, and I've smacked one or two of them in my younger days.

I lived in Maui for a couple years, when we went fishing my friends granma would bring a bottle of rum or vodka along. We would bring fish alongside the boat, she would pour a shot down the fishes mouth...instant compliance and would swear the fish tasted better...we would make Sushi right there on the boat and BBQ when we got home.
good times.

 i didn't claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat vegtables ;D

"Vegetarian" in aboriginal languages means "Lousy Hunter"....lol

It is true however that most living creatures do seem to feel pain unless they have extremely primitive nervous systems. In the case of Lobsters and crabs we always drop them into the boiling water head first. This instantly does them in. I've actually seen a live lobster dropped in tail first come back out of the pot. You can also do a lobster in by pushing a knife through the back at the tail/body junction, severing the main nerve.

If you didn't know........crustaceans like shrimp, lobster and such are related to the MADAGASCAR HISSING COCKROACHE........So...........if you decide to forgo eating that lobster due to the roach relationship, please let me know and I will be right over to dispose of them in the proper fashion................ :headbang: ;D

Don't forget............Rum's the word!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe the florida fish and game needs to look into this tool that a friend of mine got a patent on several years ago that removes fish hooks without injuring or killing the fish.I have the tool on my boat and use it when i dont catch and filet.
