Before lunch we completed our grid pattern across the entire middle section of the field. My first 2 recordable finds were the fourrée denarius & a hammered, but the Roman Bronzes had trickled out.
So after lunch we both agreed to grid for 2 hours below the main spread of the Roman coins, just to check they had run out in that direction (like we thought). There were no further Roman Coins but Cru'dad gave one of those funny Gold Coin noises, which confused me for a second, as I thought, 'it can't be Celtic Gold so must be a Nice Roman Silver'! Nope....:headbang:

(5 Hours)

Steam Engine Cog? (anyone know?)
Livery Button
Crotal Bell
Roman Steelyard Weight
Late Medieval Buckles
Jetton
3 Scrappies
Silver Plated Roman Coin
James I Halfgroat (Hammered)
1881 Sydney Australia Sovereign (22 Ct Gold mined in Australia)

It's been some years since we last had a modern Gold Coin, & it took 20 acres of systematic searching to pluck this random out of the field. Nearest house is 1 mile & we were not getting any other period finds...:laughing7:

Most of the pull tabs we dig in this field were still on the cans. Dug tons of cans & cans slaw from this land, more than normal.

Yes sadly, non-members can't claim banners.

Cru'dad is not a member, so please don't Vote!

Get him to join TNet, that is also a great find.....

You know that's not true, he never keeps up with me, or is that your last visit?:laughing7: (George & the Dragon)

Ok, you do better as long you don't perform a headstand in a ditch.... :tongue3:

British coin minted in Australia. I didn't know before Australia become completely independent not until 1907. Was that coin exclusively minted in Australia or were there british minted coins also? Same design?

OK in 1881, no Sovereigns were minted that year in Britain. (Designs varied, but that design is used in British minted examples)
Instead of shipping gold back to the UK, making coins & shipping them back (more risky). They minted in Australia, left the coins they needed & shipped the ones they didn't.

Man o man you must be chuffed!

What a fantastic find! Thanks for the post and congratulations

Congrats to Crudad on a fantastic gold coin

Very unusual but awesome find! Please pass on my best to Cru'Dad .....

I forgot to mention those buckles are amazing. The spectacle buckle is something I'm after....although those look earlier than we see over here. Is that correct?
