Scott I bought my 13 year old nephew a nice backpack for Christmas. He recently moved to the mountains to live with his grandparents. He's quite the hunter. Like me at his age, he said he wanted to start hiking into the mountains and camping on his own for 3 days at a time....... So I got him a North Dace back pack to get him started.... He loves it. He's a great kid. I would say what I've taught him and where his heart his he is able to camp alone for 3 days at 13 years old...... Can't say that about many kids his age.

What a wonderful opportunity your nephew has! Is he interested in Boy Scouts?
They can teach many skills and morals to young men.
I was a First Class Scout, Member of the Senior Patrol and even had a Webelos Den in my neighborhood that I organized and was Den Chief. All during High School.

Just warn him about "snipe hunts."
