Sorry if these questions have been asked time and again.
But I'm considering upgrading to the Deus from a ATP.

1) Learning curve. how hard is this machine to set up and start relic hunting??

2) dependability . Has there been many issues with this machine?
it is pretty high tech!!

3) Depth. I have heard from everyone how fast the recovery speed is with the Deus.
but how does the Deus perform on deep targets? let's say a 10" quarter or a 11" mini ball ?

4) head to head. On a head to head comparison how does the Deus compare to the ATP on dry land relic hunting?
will the Deus bring new life to a place that has been hunted out by a ATP?

again I apologize for all of the questions. But my wife will kill me if I "need" another machine after I purchase a Deus. i'm not kidding

1) The learning curve has a pretty good angle to it, but easy enough.
Gary's videos are a must in the learning curve.
This is Gary's Deus page
xp metal detectors Deus version 3.2
This is Gary's training Videos there are 10

Get Andy's book "the Deus Hand book. ( you might wait until V4 comes out and he writes the book on that)
But you need to have the book.
The Deus is up-dateable and will up-date when the V4 comes out.
2) I've had my Deus for over 4 years and had zero problems with it. (now watch it break)
3) Watch Calabash Diggers videos. he shows how he sets up his Deus and some good tips.
Here's one to get you started https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xa7b3DzKXk&feature=youtu.be
4) I can't give you a head to head, but will tell you the Deus runs right up there with the best and set up right can surpass them.
My Deus has opened up a bunch of old sites that were thought hunted out.

Hope this helps

I got it because it's quite in the areas I couldnt get the AT quiet in. I had problems with noise and overloading. Even with discrimination and turning down power.

So now I'm working the areas with no noise and chatter while using another's program and checking depths on items with preloaded programs while using discrimination and haven't been seeing depth loss.
Using the program I'm using I've noticed in relation to the AT.
No chatter.
The VDI readings show different while using different frequencies.
Large Cents where good in the ground and air to 12-13".
The Deus hits hard on round balls at depth. The same response I would get from silver with AT.
However Silver quarters gave me the same sound as penny's around them.

It's not a turn on and go detector. You have to learn it and learn what works best in the ground your standing with shuttle adjustments to a base program that works for you.
It's half the weight and wireless and rechargeable.

Don't take what I wrote to the bank. As I have only been using it for two weeks and I haven't a clue. I'm still reading Andy's book and haven't seen a how to video yet.

First off let me say this its on a whole different level than the AT PRO its worth the upgrade, I started with a pro and hunted sites and when I took the deus back to those sites it was like they were never hunted. I can give you a relic program to start with that I hunt with 90% of the time and 2 others for very thick iron I mean thick iron ,it then basically becomes a turn on and go detector BUT you need to learn what each setting does so that you can tweak the programs a little as site conditions warrant. The setting seem over whemling at first but there not after you put some time in, Garys videos deus expert training videos are the best gives a run down of all the settings ,they are high quality. If you are on the fence about the pro dont be the deus is the best relic machine out there period. I WILL WARN YOU about programs watch out where you get them from as some who post them have no clue about the machine and they will give you one that will kill the performance of the machine. Its not that hard to learn ,you will get frustrated in the beginng our at least I did on deep big iron BUT you will click with the audio after awhile and you will call 95% after that. Let me know how I can help you on your journy. hh btw it is high tech but not to complicated , and a head to head comparision of the 2 the deus eats it alive and it doesnt matter what they say over on the garrett forum im proficent with both and know whats up. I actually have a head to head video of the 2 on my channel and in the head to head section.

thanks to everyone for the great info. I have pretty much made up my mind. I will be ordering the Deus very soon.
So look forward to plenty of PM's !!!!

Deus over ATPro with one caveat - a sniper coil on the ATPro would most likely perform better than the Deus w/9" coil among extreme iron and/or modern trash. I've done it myself with the V3i and both 6" concentric or shooter dd. I'd imagine a hockey puck on the ATP would be just as effective shooting among extreme trash.

The 9" deus may be detuned to run close to a 7" coil, but it still has all the drawbacks of a DD coil. But size for size...Deus is a great choice.

Agreed. But thinking long-term, Deus is close to releasing its new 6" x 9" coil. I wouldn't be deterred from buying the XP Deus as you will have small coil options soon enough :)

Yep. And I look forward to the field reports on them, but the small coil option for the Deus comes with a hefty price just to lose a few inches in width.

Is it worth it? :dontknow: I have my doubts.

I was actually looking at the 11" coil. would that not be the best choice?

the only time I use the 11 is when I field hunt and its clean of vegetation. I use the 9 in the woods and in iron .The deus nine inch coil is amazing I cant tell any difference in depth in my soil between it and the 11. Guys that had used the deus told me to get the 9 ,I bought the 11 to start and picked a used 9 up and then I put the 11 away. So my suggestion is the 9 to start amazing coil. thats if your relic hunting in the woods and iron.

i got the 11' coil with mine and i pretty much hunt exclusively in the woods and do not have a problem. i am glad i got the 11', really.

the learning curve is not steep at all IMOP. I have used it 4 times now and feel I have a decent handle on it. but, i do read, watch youtube videos, talk to folks like Calabash Digger and jadocs about various programs and other information.

I also own an AT Pro and a Fisher CZ-5. If i had to keep one, it would be the Deus, for sure. Get the Deus and you will wonder why you did not get it earlier. I sure do!

Cletus, I highly recommend calling Bart at Big Boys Hobbies if you get an XP Deus. He got mine out that day and I got it FAST. The guy is there for you also once you purchase it. Price matches also.

You might think about accessories. IMO don't get the waterproof kit....get a different machine or keep the ATP. I use my Deus in the rain often. Protect the controller (or leave in truck) and go. WS4 are waterproof more than enough for rain.

I purchased a bunch of accessories with mine....the car charger is the only thing that I use. I used the hard case in July to travel to CO and it was great.

Cover your controller with a phone case ...acyra case or something (search this forum)....waterproof/dustproof ...works awesome.

Coil bolt/washers...get a few spares. I'll post pictures why after the Turkey flys off. After Thanksgiving.

Extra charging clip for back-up. I don't have an extra but I'd feel alot better if I did. If that clip breaks or goes bad...your coil is down until you get another. I personally am bothered by that!

That's about all a guy needs. Controller case, coil bolts/washers, spare charge clip, and possibly a hard case if you travel or plan to travel. That's all I'd get if I were to do it again.

I was actually looking at the 11" coil. would that not be the best choice?

The 11" is my prefered coil. But if I only had one machine or could afford only one coil for the Deus I'd probably go with the 9" only for the reason it swings inbetween corn rows better. With the 11" it's more a game of bumper pool.

I'd say the size getting into tighter spots is where the advantage lies.

I hope that you will report back after you've gained some experience, and let us all know your thoughts on this matter!

Once you see how feather-light it is, and how free you feel without a cord tying your want to your head, you will love it. Just be sure to put that wand down somewhere that it can't roll away on you! Remember that it isn't attached anymore!

I just watched all ten videos. The last 4 I'll need to watch a few dozen more times to get it to sink in.
What did sink in is Dubstep. It's been ringing in my ears all night.

Also, agree with all of the above (or most of it, at least ;) ) Would also recommend getting Andy Sabisch's Deus Handbook. A wealth of information that backs up the videos you will be watching but also a great reference guide when in the field (wish it were pocket sized, but I do keep it in the car just in case I want to try something new or forget a setting).

Regarding hardware configuration: I have both the 9" and 11" and prefer the 9". Can't explain it but the 9" just seems to be more "tuned in" or something with the main control box. The 11" works fine, but (1) have not seen an appreciable depth increase with the 11" over the 9", (2) can pinpoint better with the 9" vs. the 11", (3) can handle tight situations better (obviously), and (4) could be my imagination, but the 9" coil seems less vulnerable to EMI (electromagnetic inteference) noise than the 9". The 11" is my ready backup and will use it in a pinch, but is mainly relegated to 2nd banana status or is used as a second detector. Remember, with the Deus if you have the wireless headphones, the control box and two coils, you basically have two detectors as the headphones can marry up with one coil and the control box (and speaker or wired headphones) can be use with the other coil. Two upper grip shaft sections complete the set. Two coils is not an option for most because the coils self contain the brains (to enable to the coil to pair with Deus wireless headphones and/or control box) and integrated battery so they are much more expensive than typical accessory coils. But just thought I would mention it.

Also, my personal plug for the WS4 backphones. I find the backphones to be the most flexible option vs. the over the ear WS5's. Unlike the WS5, the WS4 hockey puck control module on the backphones can be removed an remounted in various configurations such as in a watch band like holder to wear on your wrist or mounted to the main pole using a special mount adapter - an audio jack adapter can be snapped onto the back of the hockey puck so that a set of wired phones can be plugged into it. Their are also some third party over the ear headphones that the hockey puck controller can be plugged into for a configuration very similar to the WS5 (my personal favorite third party WS4 compatible headphones are Vance Muffs as they render the best full tone sound). Some people, however, find the WS4 backphones to be too tight fitting and they are not necessarily the most rugged contstruction. But they are water resistant, and if you break the backphones, you can just order a new set for around $20 and plug the old hockey puck controller (the expensive item) into the replacement backphones.

Good luck and Happy Hunting

can all programs be added in the field? is there anything besides updates that you need a computer for?
