There is a place in my mom and dads yard that has so much iron in it, that metal detecting is almost impossible....so my dad built me a table sifter and I've been digging/sifting. Here's some of the stuff I've found in the last couple of days: IMG_8850 (2) (1024x683).jpg

There are a couple of things I have questions about---one is a child's ring. It was bent out of shape so I tried to straighten it out---of course it cracked :-[ but you can still see a neat picture/profile of Lady Liberty(?) and a date of 187? on it. I think its just a dime store ring or cracker jack ring, but would like to know more about it.

Have y'all ever seen one like this before? IMG_8826 (2) (1024x684).jpg

And I also found an emblem with US and crossed rifles on it---my husband said its probably a toy because it's so thin:

Thanks for looking and any info you guys could provide would be great!

It does resemble ww1 pin but doesn't look military. Crossed rifles were made between 1897- 1920's. usually though with crossed rifles there would be a number. Like a regiment number. Plus the lettering style is off and I've never seen the u and the s separated that far.

Wow. Everything looks old. Any coins? I have seen other stuff from your yard that was cool. What do you think the beads are from?

Pretty kewl sifting finds! All the artifacts I see appear too be late 19th too early 20th century! I know how it feels hitting a spot and getting nothing but iron signals but it is what it is! you gotta hunt it very slow at a turtles pace and check every signal and it may even take an hour too hit a good signal but there will be some!

Also It looks like you may be getting into a Trash pit if you are getting all that out of a sifter from my years of digging trash pits what you are finding are pretty common finds for a late 19th century trash pit or at least around an old house. I would bet if you started digging test holes and digging up under all that iron the chances of you finding good relics will increase and hitting a trash pit sure is a good chance! If you haven't found the trash pit yet it feels like it is close by!

Wowed!! That looks like so much fun! Good dads, though, are the best treasure! Mine does all sorts of things for me, too, like building sifters for shark- tooth hunting, during which I found my only point. He is probably my biggest THing fan, too. Glad to hear you and your dad share this, too. Happy hunting there- great stuff!

Cool stuff

Good eye Bigcy! Fake 1872 California gold coin ring. If you Google it you'll see several examples of REAL gold coins made into jewelry.

I think the crossed rifles are off a child's (toy) military hat.

Those dates would fit right in with the time this house was made. Thank you DoranHashemi!

Yes there were 2 coins in this dig---one was a V nickel and the other a 1900 Indian Head penny. The nickel was worn almost completely smooth---I put a big old gouge in it too with the shovel. And you asked about the beads--I think some of them could be trade beads, because the people who lived there were Osages(Native Americans). You know, probably one of the neatest things I've found in this pit is a piece of flint(maybe a small broken scraper). That shows how they transitioned from Indian way of life to the white ways. And all the stuff I've found so far really shows how well off these Indians were! They lost a ton of stuff in this yard---I would love to find the privy---no telling what they threw away in that. :o

Thank you HutSiteDigger---there are a couple places in this yard that we think are the trash pits---one in the east yard(everything is blackened from this one, like its been burned) and one out the back door of the house, in the south yard. I have metal detected for about 10 years in this yard and have found a ton of stuff---I've got a whole case full! I've been concentrating on the trash pit areas lately---the one out the back door seems to be the best--that's where all this stuff pictured came from. You can't imagine the amount of glass that we've dug out! And lots of old brick pieces.

Thanks DCMatt--that's just what my husband said too about the crossed rifles. And was the date 1872 when the California gold rush was on? I'll go google that now.....
