Something I could use some help identifying, was a large metal ring with a chain link attached. Found these on two separate days on the same beach.

I wish I had taken a picture before I cleaned it up some but it was pretty crapped up and I didn't even know it had the link. I just thought it was some of the concretions around it. After I cleaned it, I realized I had a matching one, or damm close, that I had found yesterday and hadn't cleaned it yet. Once I did, it sure looks like the other one. What do ya think? Any Idea what they could be?

Both found in Ocean View Virginia.

Could be anything. Maybe a tie-up ring from a wooden dock?

Possible Matt! Thanks! I'm not a good judge on age of things like this as I have no idea how long it takes for them to rust and get all corroded like they were. The one with the link was real bad and had pretty thick concretions. Not all iron. Mad of something else or a mix as it didn't null out on my excal while discriminating out the iron. I shows a mixed signal both in tone and on the 180 meter. Sometimes shows up in a neg number (iron) and as high as 163-168 on the meter with a good sound. Maybe zinc/nickle/or some other metal with some iron in it?

Doc,

Could be old iron. I have a couple of sites up here (NoVA) where the old nails jump btwn iron and silver on my Minelab. Maddening! Not sure what they are made of...

Just FYI... Be aware that when you null out iron it actually turns your detector off (won't detect anything). I turn my iron mask down but never null out iron completely as there are often good targets in an iron field.

Yeah, totally understand. Ment to say I MASK it. I do hear a tone but it's low and obviously an Iron sound. Usually not easily repeatable and if using a meter, the negative numbers start popping up. Only dug it as the rocks hold numerous targets and you sometimes get several in one spot when trying to isolate the one you want to dig. There is ALOT of iron crap on some of the beaches and I'm not looking to did all the old bolts and deck plates from piers/ships and old houses that were destroyed in the past.
