I hit the beach for some coin shooting. I was finding mostly clad when I got a steady tone with a fairly consistent 20 VDI on the Equinox. I dug the hole expecting another Lincoln cent when I spotted a tiny coin. Although grey from 170 years or so in the saltwater, I quickly recognized it as a capped bust half dime, my first capped silver of any denomination. It is dated 1837, which I believe was the last year it was minted. It is counterstamped with a ‘5,’ perhaps to distinguish it from a dime? I wish it was in better shape, but I can’t complain, as I just love digging history. Also found a 1956 silver dime and a few wheats. Not sure what the round ornate object is, or the silver/glass charm. Happy hunting and good luck out there.

Great finds congrats on the early 5 Cent Piece. :notworthy:
This is an interesting piece, I found almost an identical one a few years ago on a c1830 homestead site. Any theories on what it may have come from? Your find is in the last pic for comparison.
Thanks Dave. I think we have the same type of item. The design is different, but the construction looks identical. I have no guesses what it is, though at least you have given me a potential age. Did you have any ideas? Thanks… Steve.

I found another similar plate a few years ago... at the time I think someone said it was part of a miniature tea set for kids.... I never really looked much more into it, but maybe that's it?

Thanks for the idea. That sounds like a possibility. Now I at least have some sort of search term. Thanks!

they are usually counted as cracker jack toys though i dont believe that
they were - they came out with a line of "give aways" like that made for girls
with plates saucers cream and sugar bowls tea pots etc
i found a sugar bowl at same beach about 50 yrds away

Such a great find. Looks pretty good too given that its been bathing in saltwater for a very, very long time. Congrats on your first capped bust coin!

Thanks! If this was the What is It forum, I would mark it solved 😁.

Thanks! I would rather pull a nice capped bust out of the woods like you did, but I am nonetheless happy with it. As you note, not that bad of shape considering the environment it was lost in. .
