I dug this coin out in the middle of an old cornfield, down deep at about ten or eleven inches or so. One of those "just barely a signal" signals, almost passed it up. Was amazed when I got home and brushed it off and realized I had found my first Connecticut copper. But after doing a little research I started to suspect it was a fake, and it was confirmed today by a local guy who's an expert on colonial coppers. Not only is it too lightweight, the obverse and reverse are both at 12:00, not opposite like a regular coin. Still, he's convinced it's old, and it definitely has value as a collectible because it's counterfeit. Either way it has value to me for diggin it! Here's a link he gave me on this coin, and other colonials:

great fimd !!! counterfiets are worth more than minted coins sometimes.... ;D ;D ;D

Counterfiets are very cool. I have a fake dollar in my avatar I also thought it was real till I was at the local coin shop and we started to inspect it. As a fake it is worth more than a common dollar.

Hard to believe there was a time when making fake coins to redeem for face value was profitable.

Cool find. I recently found an imitation Nova Scotia Thistle Penny Token with a date error...it would have been worth huge if it wasn't in such crummy condition...

Hmmm.....I, for one, am not convinced it's counterfeit.....thickness looks correct so I'm not sure why it seems lightweight.....as for the die rotation, colonials were made very crudely to begin with so both sides being at 12 o'clock really isn't all that unusual. It has been said many times before to get second opinions, and in this case, I think it would be a wise decision. Great looking coin either way! Congrats!

HH all!

Hey Greg-
Thanks for being more optimistic then I am about it, but if you could see it and see how thin it is, you'd know why it's so light. I still put it right up there with my favorite finds.
Steve
