Couldn't go hunting, but I still found something.

I was under the weather for the last couple days so today I was meandering back through past conquests. I found a box of things I found waaaay back when I'd first started this hobby. One of the things was a little jar marked "Junk Rings". I went through them and could almost remember every single one of them! Where I was, how I found it, the day, everything! Kind of a pleasant way to while away a few hours.

But, I digress, Back then I didn't have any way to test rings, now, I do. Hoping to discover a pile of good rings, I went to "work". ;)

In honesty, GF, HGE, steel, brass, etc, etc, etc. LOL

All but one, but that's all it really takes to have a great day, right? ;)

I found this old Coast Guard ring. You can see a bit of the gold they put on it but it wasn't marked and it also wasn't gold. You can see the condition it was in and why a newbie might toss it in the junk pile. Heck! On one side you can see a barnacle still clinging to it! LOL Yes, it came from a water hunt.

Like I said, it didn't test for gold but I was surprised that they wouldn't at least make it out of something decent. After all it was for the "United States Coast Guard". :)

On the back, I did a bit of filing to get to the base metal. Guess what? Solid silver! Absolutely tested good.

Weighed in at 15.6 grams too.

Not too shabby for just ruminating, eh? ;)

Thanks for peeking!

HH!

That's a cool find. How old do you think that is?
I really don't know. I'd guess it might be determined by the style of the eagles/design etc. All it says on it that I can see is "United States Coast Guard" and maybe some initials like USN on the sides. :dontknow:

USN = U.S. Navy. Coast Guard is separate armed force except during wartime or when declared part of Navy by president. (Wikipedia)

Ring could be from Vietnam era, Korea or WWII. Hope this helps.

Yep, two entirely separate branches of the services. I knew that but can't explain what my eyes keep telling me. Maybe they're older than I think.

These are the best pics I can make. Sorry.

I'll leave it to the audience, what do the eagles say? :dontknow:

Very nice. Give it a good cleaning with foil, baking soda, salt and boiling water and it will be gorgeous. Would love to see an "after" pic on this one.

Another cleaning option is some fresh lemon juice to give it a good soak....it should help eliminate some of the surface crud.

Regards + HH
