Found this recently near a cellar hole along a local hiking trail about three miles in. The trail apparently follows an old dead road. It appears to be cast brass and when found was stuffed with what appeared to be cotton fibers. The hollow tube is flared at one end. There is a triangular notch along one side along with two parallel hash marks. The two short protrusions on either end (on the same side as the notch and hash marks) have small holes all the way through them. Could this possibly be a ramrod holder or a gun sight? Let us know what you think. Thank you. :) fullsizeoutput_3de6.jpegfullsizeoutput_3de9.jpegIMG_0996.JPGIMG_0997.JPGIMG_0998.JPG

Yes, it looks like the front guide for an 18th century gun. Great find.

Thank you for the ID. I am amazed to hear Brown Bess but looking it appears to be a perfect match. As with many finds it gets the imagination going. Yes finding the rest or even a bit more would be awesome, making plans to go back on Labor Day. What better way to spend a holiday.
