A couple of years ago, there was a fairly lengthy discussion here on 'bitten bullets'. I'll try and find it.
From memory , the accepted opinion was that the culprits were hogs (No, not Harley Owners Group :D ) scratching up the ground, looking for a feed.
Whether they chewed it up and spat it out as inedible, or swallowed it and it passed through them, I don't know ;D

hogs ate the dead on the battlefeild (often times the dead were not buried for days afterwards )--the bullets were in the deads flesh --chomp chomp and the hogs"passed" em out afterwards -- also in battle often folks would suck on a bullet since their mouth would run dry spit wize out of sheer terror .-- knawing and chewing on the bullet in the process ---as well as the "wounded" biting the bullet as their arms and legs were hacked off or deeply inbedded bullets were dug out of them --- the civil war was anything but civil --it was hard and ugly.

so true , war is ugly but at times needed -- sometimes its fight and die as free men to stop tyrants or bow down and live as their slaves ---

I have been to war --its not glorious or fun --however the bonds men make when one trust his life to the actions of another can form very tight bonds often for life.

If you ever write a book on the Civil War, I'm buying it.

thanks -- I try to keep it real -- many otherwize sane folks try to romance the civil war *--- people today scream "stop the war"because we've lost 5,000 people overseas on the "war on terror" in the last several years -- yet they do not think at all of the fact that 5,000 people were daily loss type numbers for a middle sized battle during the civil war . ---the civil war while rather "neat" from a historical point of veiw --was a dark nasty bloody and painful part of our countries history -- tales of deeds both decent and good and evil to the extreme both abound from it-- it honestly brought out both the best and the worsest in our men .

I think these guys chewed on bullets knowing that in the future we would kick this around back and forth and never agree on why they chewed bullets.
