I just happened to be out hunting for more metal when I stumbled across this little guy. I wasn't near any usual trails. I was quite a ways into the woods, so I don't suspect it was thrown away trash or anything. I found it at the base of a large tree, upside down and in a depression in the trunk at ground level. He also has a little metal "tag" drove into the top of his head. Maybe used to hold a feather or something?

Any ideas would help. Where would I take to get verified? Art museum? Antiques Road Show?
Thank you in advance for any info/help.[/img]

I'm not into it so I really don't have a lot of information however......I would say it is probably an item left for geo-cacheing. You give clues to a site, people use their GPS units to locate the site, find an item, and leave one for the next person. I have heard of some pretty unusual items being left/found.

Interesting find! I don't believe that anyone has positively ID'd this stone head yet , have they? I'm reading this post and replying via cell phone so I may have missed an ID. Anyway, I believe that stone head to be a representation of the Santeria god Ellegua. He goes by many names and is a factor in many African religions. He is often associated with making sure prayers get to other gods. The head is used in many rituals, including burial I believe. I would post a link to a photo if I were on my PC. I think you could find a photo at Paganwiki. There's a good horror movie about Santeria called The Believers. The head is seen in it several times. Creepy. Those shells are also used in Santeria. Maybe someone could post a link about it. Hope this helped.

Looks like you stumbled across the remnant of someone performing Santeria rituals back in the woods.

If you find a bird in your front yard with its feet tied together they may be watching you. lol I think sprinkling pennies around is also a curse to keep you poor. Just joking, dont worry but I would put it back. Just be careful when you go back not to trip over the goats head or chicken feet. R2D2 are you reading this?

a mon did chu pu bac dat ting yet? -- yu don wanna mess wit dos tings bad ju ju -- put it bac mon .

I tried to tell you right away its an caribbean "islanders" -- contact the dead item -- they put it with the ashes of the dead --often in a remote out of the way spot in the woods -- that way when they get the "blues" and miss their loved ones ***they go there and "speak" to their loved ones (the dead) out in the woods far from others (-- the head item well --- thats their vodoo "contact" god from the world of the living to that of the dead )

WARNING --- YOU REALLY DO NOT WANT TO KEEP THIS THING IN YOUR HOUSE!!! -- reportly its thought of as a "portal" god -- in that it lets messages flow from living to dead and vice versa --thus keep it in your home "opens" it up to visitors from the other side --not always good ones either! ----thats the main reason why ithe islanders keep them in the woods rather than in their homes .

Nope, still here...You guys are amazing! I thought the subject was going dead! I was feeling a little lost.
This is my busy season at work so I haven't been online since my last post. Thank you all for helping me put it to rest so to speak. I thought I was pretty good at finding things in the internet, but alas, I have been schooled majorly this time.

BigCy, Ivan, and Je177 [Great ID!] and all the rest that helped, thank you again. I hope one day to be of such good help back, you know, return the favor.

So fa, "NO bad Ju-Ju" (so fa, anyway. Well, it's a shame he can't stay!). I do suppose that it aint worth nuthin', at least in the physical sense. Especially at the risk of hurting someone's "Totem" or something else even worse. As I said I will put it back. No need to be rootin' where ya ain't wanted. This weekend it'll be back, but this time I will set it back to upright. Hey you never know, maybe by putting the thing back, I will find the other dropped antler that I was lookin for in the first place! lol
Seriously though, I hope my learning curve speeds up this summer. The Explorer II SE is so much more than the other detector I used, I seem to get more confused the more I use it. I am just gonna keep plugging away, digging every signal and covering every hole.
Once again,
Thanks a whole bunch everybody, this has been a great first experience. I am sure more will folllow.

Ok, BigCy, will do. (I wasn't sure how to end the post.)
Also, By the way, for those who aren't believers, the following picture is of the stone head back in it's original place in the woods where I found it.
Y'all have a good one, I will sleep easier knowing it's back where it belongs.
