I'd say definitely not of the Kirk cluster varieties. Illinois does matter, point types vary from state to state. Your buddies point looks late middle woodland period- late woodland period.
Perhaps of the late middle period "manker " type or the late Woodland "Jacks Reef" type in Illinois.
I'll show some examples of each type from Illinois. Keep in mind that just one picture of a particular type of point can be very misleading because within every point type classification there can be a great deal of variation from one example compared to another, even when multiple examples of a particular type are recovered from the same time period and in the same archeological site.
Also pay particular attention to the shape of the notches from the barbs to the base of the stem on your buddies piece and the examples I show.
Lastly, the material that your buddies piece is made doesn't look like the more common types in Illinois. In your pictures it appears to be pretty grainy. Perhaps made from glacial till, but it could also be heat treated Burlington chert, the most common material used in Illinois. Whatever it is, it must have a lot of iron oxide in it accounting for the red color.ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1501305811.632976.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1501305829.522016.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1501305844.892249.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1501305859.655130.jpg

Thanks so much Mark! My other thought was a late archaic table rock. Your book images are great. Does it have a table rock listed? Thanks!!

Here you go!
And I agree that a "Table Rock " would be be more viable than a "Kirk" , but the quality of the material makes me think Woodland Period, however you might be on to something...

Thanks dirt fishing wolf.
I'm on the fence. It looks like a table rock, but some have said it may also be a hopewell Snyder as the blade is quite wide. Either way, it's a pretty point in my opinion.
Thanks
