A couple years ago while fishing at a river I happened to look down to see 3 coins(IH cents) stacked on a flat stone 5" from waters edge. I was amazed that I'd just found coins from the 1880's. Then last year I detected the site and found 6 more IH cents and a 1898 Barber quarter. The site has a bunch of old debris, old bricks, old broken bottles. I was wondering if maybe someone could have thrown a jar-full or maybe it was a swimming hole, 3 stacked coins doesnt seem like they could've been dropped. Anybody have any thoughts about it? I will definately be back when the river goes down a bit, it was at flood stage last week.

Check that site out carefully. I don't think someone just happened to drop those coins. Check upstream and all over the banks. Sounds like you happened on to a good cache there

I'll let ya know what I find. Still waiting for river level to go down.

While you're waiting, you may want to check out the river banks upstream. There could be something up there.

Now that the snow is almost gone I should be able to get checking the spot. Stay tuned!

I hunted at this spot today for about a 1/2 hour. Found another IH cent 188? There's alot of "Trash" but when the river recedes a bit more and it's not raining I'll sort through it to find the coins. The bank is steep about 8' then levels off a bit near the waters edge. The bank is undercut up high and today I noticed the "rubble" is way up underneath. I may have to pick around up under there.

I may think that the coins were lost by a fisherman many years ago. Best of luck to you. I live in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

That could be a possibility. It seems that the area has been pretty well traversed. I've added 25+ arrowheads to my collection from this 1/4 mile section. There is also some sort of small bridge impoundment downstream 200 yds. The spot with the coins is over loaded with metal debris, glass, (and what looks like flakes of ashes). I found the guts of a pocket watch and a 6" oval metal ("plate") showing a historic hotel in Saratoga,NY. It reads underneath the picture"U.S. Hotel Saratoga,NY". On the reverse it says " NO. 152 ". The land was owned by the prominant family of the towns founder in the early 1800's. I'm kinda still thinking it was a dump site and hopefully they dumped some serious loot!
