I generally do my digging looking for old bottles. I have a few from the 1890's and the early 1900's . But nothing really special except to me . Some times I use a metal detector to get an idea where the perimeter of the dump is Yesterday I had about an hour to do some looking. I started with my detector and quickly got a signal . After a few minutes of digging something round came out . I thought it was a knock out plug to an electrical box . After looking very close I was able to make out one cent on the one side. The other side was so covered with grime that it was not possible for me to see anything .I had never found an old coin before but I thought this was one . So I packed up and went home . With a little water and some rubbing I figured out was a coin but did not know what . Some research showed me it is a Coronet Liberty coin . The date is completely worn off and it is so dirty that I doubt anything would show on a picture . At least with the equipment I have . Are there any major changes from the start of minting to when they stopped that could help indicate a date ? Also just a guess but should I spend some more time in that location or was it just a random thing to find it in what looks like the middle of no where. Thanks

I have tried to get a good picture but the coin is so dark that you can not make out any detail on the picture .On the back side it shows one cent surrounded by a wreath of leaves .On the front is the head of a lady with long braided hair and across the top of her head it says Liberty .Even with a magnifying glass I can not see any part of a date .Thanks

Take a pic with the light hitting it at an angle, and we might see some details.

I assume that you have a large cent. If you can still see "liberty" that's a good sign.

How big is it? Sounds like a Large cent or half cent. Never heard of a coronet liberty coin.

I most likely am calling it something it is not .I have never found an old coin before and I am trying to figure out what it is . The front is most difficult to make out .But it has the head of a lady with what appears to be braided hair and on her forehead it has the word Liberty . On the other side it has one cent in the center surrounded by a wreath of leaves .No date is noticeable to me .I am trying to get a couple of pictures but it is so dark that when I take a pic it just looks like a brown spot . I agree that it should be referred to as a Large cent . My lack of knowledge about what I found is the reason I am trying to find whatever info I can .From what I have been able to find this was made from 1793 to 1859 or something close to those dates .Again if I have that wrong it is because I am totally out of my experience with old coins . I will try again tomorrow to get some pictures . Thanks to everyone that has responded and please bear with me as I try to figure out what I have found .

001.JPG002.JPG003.JPG004.JPG005.JPGI am going to try to add a few pictures .The date stamp on them will not be correct .I have not used this camera for a while .This is my first attempt at posting pictures so if I messed up I will try again . Anyway I doubt that I can get a better pic of what I found .What you see is what I can do.

Should I leave it the way it is or should I attempt to clean it up to find a date .I do not think I will find it even with some cleaning .On the other hand I am not looking to turn this into some monetary item .It is way to neat just for the history of it just sell it for a few dollars .

I believe it is the braided hair type, 1839- 1857. Sometimes if you make a rubbing using smooth shiny aluminum foil you can make out details that you can't see on the coin.

It was a good suggestion, but I still can not see any hint of a date . The word Liberty is fairly visible with a magnifying glass ,but the outside edge is just covered with grime.

Due to the darkness of the coin and pics, I can't see the grime that you indicate. If the coin does have grime as you state, then soak the coin in Mineral Oil for several weeks up to several months, periodically checking the coin with a toothpick or green Rose Thorn for looseness of the grime. If and when the grime becomes loose enough to remove with a toothpick or green Rose Thorn, clean as much of the grime off the coin as possible, then rinse with water, check for Date and extra details that have shown up, then pat the coin dry and place it in a 2x2 coin holder. Extra Virgin Olive Oil can be used instead of Mineral Oil and although Olive Oil will break down grime, dirt and encrustations much better, it will darken the coin.

Huntsman The reason the pictures are so dark is because the coin is that dark .I was barely able to see the one cent on the one side .Thanks for your suggestion about cleaning . Certainly sounds like it would help . GAP As I mentioned before I mostly look for old bottles and had never found any old coins .I sometimes do some metal detecting .What I am use to finding is shotgun shells , bolts and other broken parts from farm machinery and wire .I have been out digging and detecting for more years than I care to think about in some ways. But I am still thankful I am able to do it . The items I find are mostly of small value . But it is fun and finding this website has made it more satisfying . I like finding stuff but I like learning the history about what I find. Until this week I never even knew there was such a thing as a Large Cent . Thanks to everyone that has responded. I am feeling like I am very lucky with my find .Thanks

After doing some more research it appears to me that I have the Matron version of the Large Cent . That may be as close as I can get for a date .I can accept that. For all those that offered their input thanks again .Four days ago I thought I have found a round steel knockout plug from an electrical box .
