The oldest house in town is only a half mile from my house and there are hundreds of acres of corn and hay fields. Even though it was raining pretty heavily this morning I just couldn't stop thinking about a corn field I found a few kglll last fall. For some reason I forgot about this field until I was going through my notes and seen something I wrote about the British being there in 1773 and the local militia practicing in the area before the battle at Bennington VT. When I got there I could see all the corn had been cut but the grass was really tall so it was a bit rough but did manage a few keepers. Hopefully in the spring I can get back when it gets plowed and find some older relics and possibly something related to the revolutionary way.
2 no date LC and a 1843 LC. A few indian heads a 1942 merc and a wheat penny. A few buckles, round balls, and buttons. Two watch winder keys, at least one of them is. Not sure about the bigger one. What looks like a piece from a drawer pull and a John Tyler Cracker Jack token. Oh and a 14 k ring! Happy hunting

super finds. I'd love a hunt like that

That gold nust have been quite a surprise, not something you "expect" from a corn patch.

I hear you on corn stubble, and "rough" conditions, you had a great hunt.

I think what you're calling drawer pull is in the top right of the picture ? I've found 2 or 3 of those, and might be, part of the flint lock mechanizm, I am far from sure though.

When conditions improve on that spot it will be just like virgin soil again.

The ring was a very nice surprise. That's the 3rd gold I've found this year. From cellar holes and fields. If that mystery piece was from a flint lock it would be a much better find than from a drawer pull. Hopefully we'll hear some
More opinions.

Yes good finds! I am also looking forward to do some farm field hunting. They almost have all the soy beans cut from a large field down the road from me. Nice and flat and no mud. Did find a 48 LC a few years back out there which is a tough find in my area, being in the Midwest. Although I did find one in another field last spring and two last fall with a 37 caped dime at a third field. Pretty much anything older then civil war era can be tough finds here in Ill. Again nice finds, looks like a good spot.

Thanks. I was actually surprised by the age of the finds. Usually it's older in this area but I can't complain because a good variety of finds is what I like. There's old stuff to be found all over this country. Research research research. Capped bust dimes are nice. found one a few months ago. I'm still looking for my yearly draped bust.

I have never got a gold ring from a field (IE not sports field) Closest I came was last year with a small ladys watch, but after removing the back the glas, and the works I was left with just one gram.

I think I'll take back what I said about the ball headed screw, looking at the bigger picture again, I don't have a clue.

The ring before this one was at a old cellar hole. Oxbowbarefoot and I digging old buttons and state coppers and then I found a big gold ring. the hallmark was so small and looked strange so All day I was thinking it was 200 year old ring but when we got back he noticed it was a 1961 class ring. Maybe one day ill find some old gold.

Well just one opinion here, but I don't think it matter with gold, as gold is gold. You know I started MDing with two main objectives, 1) as I have did quite a bit of panning I was wanting to find natural gold without all the back-breaking work of panning the dust stuff, however since I don't live all that close to any of the gold districts I have been quite content finding local relics, and coins etc. That said I do want to get into the electronic prospecting end of it.

2) my second reason for getting into MDing was to meet more people like myself "finders" we'll call em. I was always into finding stuff. It started many years ago with bottle digging, then arrow head hunting, then gold panning, and somewhere in between we did a bit of wild mushroom collecting, so my whole life my favorite hobbies have been about collecting "found" stuff.

After 7 or 8 years I still haven't gotten to gaol #1, I can at least say I do have a couple of good friends out of it. ZDD is the best.

Sorry if I babbled, I sometimes do. (smiley laughing)

Oh yeah congrats on the gold class ring...still on my list...I did get a silver one.

The brass ones are certainly from drawers. One went on either side of the U-shaped piece that was used to actually pull out the drawer, and then they screwed into the wood.

The iron versions of those, very seldom recovered, could be a part of the flint lock jaw from a musket.

Right you are BB.
I wasn't sure by no means, and have no problem being wrong, boy does that bother some people.
So what ever I have that is similar looking is NOT a musket part, and like you say probably part of a drawer pull set.
(I even have a couple of the "U shaped" handles.)

I can see wht the iron musket parts are not recovered, as an iron grunt, and low numbers is something almost everyone would pass on.

Really nice finds, there. It's funny that you mention the battle of Bennington, it's about 40 minute drive from me and just yesterday a friend of mine has given me permissiong to hunt his land which by the way, butts right up to the battlefield. One step and your on the field, one step back and your on his property. He said i can't hunt it till spring due to hunting season but nonetheless, i'm excited. Again, super cool finds, Greylock.

I would be stoked too. Good luck in the spring

Damn buddy some nice stuff there. I know it's not as old as you'd like but LCs aren't too shabby. That early ih is in nice shape

I sure wish my 'field finds' looked that good Greylock! :occasion14:
Gold and silver in one hunt too ... it doesn't get much better then that!

Dave

Thanks bud. The field is separated into two sections by a road. One side is flat ground and the other has a bit of a hill. I wonder if the hill side gets less fertilizer and that's why it came out so clean. I'm going back after I take care of a few things around the house. Hopefully ill have some more to show

You got some great finds from the field and if you have to get something modern a gold ring is not bad, congrats.

Nice saves and a gold ring to boot! Awesome! Nothing like a field that keeps on giving!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I went back today and got the same as yesterday but no large cents or rings. I found my only spanish silver across the road at an old cellar hole so I'm hoping to get some old silver out if this place but ya never know.
