I told him that I have talked to the parks department and they sad I can dig here as long as I fill my holes ..he said sorry you have to go :icon_scratch:

The adjacent county to me (Monroe County) does not require any permit but recently a new county sheriff in the area has kicked out metal detectorists from Webster Park for no reason at all. So now we can't go to that particular park for fears of being arrested/fined. Isn't there anything "we the people" can do about it????

.... I think it's better than showing up one day and the words, "No Metal Detecting Allowed" have been added to the sign of park rules.

whadifind, I'm having trouble understanding you. How does the lack of someone "asking permission" (where there were no rules forbidding metal detecting) automatically lead to signs/rules being enacted to forbid detecting? Do you think asking permission (where there was never a prohibition to begin with) will deflect such-a-rule from coming into being? This does not logically follow. Because if it were really true that someone at city hall didn't want people metal detecting (thus getting a bug-in-their-bonnet to erect a sign), then by logical deduction, those-type-people would never have told you "yes", to begin with. So I'm at a loss to understand you.

And on the contrary: people asking permission is actually the GENESIS of a lot of the rules that forbid metal detecting. You know the old song and dance of "gee, I guess we better address this pressing issue, and clarify or invent a policy etc...."

Well, I will tell you that I am the absolutely LAST one I would ask for an explanation. Yeah, I know, trying to understand my own thought. Who better to ask? :) But, it seems that no matter HOW I put together words on a page anymore, what comes back from them makes me feel that I simply am unable to put words together in a cohesive manner, anymore. I re-read my own words and then try to understand what comes back and have been for quite a while now. I'm sorry, I am just at a loss to explain. My skills at making the written word say what I THINK I'm trying to get across must be really bad! Worse than I ever believed would become the case.

All that being said and for whatever it's worth, I'll try this.

The people whom we would ask for an official permission would be much more inclined to follow a constituency that says something than one who remains in the "Silent Majority". (now, where have I heard that before? ;)

Yes, if there was no rules there before, asking for permission would bring them to a head, so to speak. This may lead to rules being set forth that obviously some would not desire. But, at the same time, official complaints, police reports. Especially from those who have nothing better to do than to pick on the lonely little ole man/woman who is just trying to live out their poor, sad, little lives by walking around and picking up trash. Yet, since they "have the commissioners' ear". The ones who can don't want to be bothered anymore than we do. BUT, all they have to do is put up a sign that says no and they're done.

So, and in my opinion, of course, we who stay in the silent majority. Will ALWAYS need to worry about hearing footsteps. Is my plea a call to arms? NO.

Just that if a police officer or any other official comes up and we can "name drop". Either by a written slip or by knowing the commissioner, "MIGHT" be able to show the official who is REALLY causing the problem. The busy body who just HAD to call the police away from important things to come chase a lowly old detectorist from hallowed ground. Why? Because they wanted to and were not silent about their desires.

This needs to be on a case by case. Some, it's better to say, ok. Walk away and just come back another day. So they might see who's really causing the issue.

I'm sorry if my feeble attempt is not as clear as I would want it to be. I just don't seem to have a good grasp on written conversation anymore :dontknow:

Hope it helps.
HH!

I know this isn't going to help much but 90% of our Public Parks are totally out of bounds. So at least you can do it - mostly.
