I think I know what this is but I would like that confirmed independantly. It was found relatively shallow in a field. We found three of them in a relatively small area. Anyone have any idea what it could be?

I know what your talking about, just never saw or heard of them before.Sounds pretty reasonable though.Keep us posted as to what you find out.I think you may be on to something.I have heard of coffin plates and even heard of them often being removed by family members as keepsakes, but they were always engraved with names and dates.I know that is not what you are referring to but I figured i'd post a couple examples anyway.Interesting post,i'm anxious to find out exactly what these are, with some examples to go with it.Especially since they have been found by more than one member and are identical.Cool find! -diggummupromeo-1 said:A little more research has noted that this was sort of an inventory marker for a coffin as apposed to a grave marker. Apparently these were affixed to a coffin for inventory purposes but removed prior to burial. A number was affixed to the copper piece by way of a paper label.
Still searching for positive identification.
