And a 1850 LC,
Well my Southern boys came up for a visit again. I told them this is it!!!
No more visit for at least a year. Lol
Well we hit a place today, that produced quite well. Im only going to speak for me. But let me tell you they detected me under the table. It was there day.
We had a blast!
Iam really hoping this is a copper tobacco pipe.. there are as rare as hen teeth. Lol any help would be great. This was found way way down, right by a spring house.
This property goes back to early 1700. It is well known colonist.
In fact his name is on the Declaration of Independence!!!!!
Brand new property for me.
Also found some tombac buttons, and a really cool eagle button. Im thinking its a sportsmen button?
And found a flying eagle cent, and some silvers.
Like I said, Smittyman and Beez, did alot better then me????? Wow.
There will post when they get back.
Thanks for looking.
George
Ps, the silver cufflink and 1 meek was from the other day and the pewter mold button.

I haven't heard of a copper pipe, but I hope it's the real thing, that would be a very interesting piece. Very good looking buttons, the one with the little silvery flowers is a real looker. AS USUAL I'm impressed with your silver coin count, and love that SLQ.

Was going to message you and see if you've been out lately, I guess you have! I'm in a rut, can't get out much and when I have it's been slim.

George - great to speak with you again today. There are some good comments posted here regarding your copper relic, and although it appears to be some kind of pipe, it's hard to imagine how it was used and for what. But they did exist during that time period (late 1700s). And as you know, according to Hume, they were not widely used and only then for "travelers and huntsmen" who required pipes of sturdier construction than clay. We may never know the true ID of this piece, but it's definitely a very intriguing find and one that will make a nice addition to your colonial collection.

And I think the backmark on your button confirms what you were thinking earlier about it being a sportsman's.

Another thing that came to mind was a perfect grain measurement for a Musket??
We may never know i would like to see more pics of the inside/bottom etc.

I think that a fitting or other piece off a whiskey still.... might be a possibility.

Turned with stem down and cap on top it looks like the top/cap to a still.
It's size (if small as I'm guessing) kinda leans more towards a secondary distillation,of wine for example.

Edit, dang Steve, while I'm peckin and lookin for pics....

You certainly are piling up the finds, love the button

That has very early still written all over it. Looks like a small still, 5 gallon or less, connection from the thumper keg to the worm.

I smoke a briar myself, and sometimes it can get too hot to handle, can't imagine trying to smoke from copper - BUT - see the post on this forum under Our Discoveries, My Best Finds - RARE 18th CENTURY DUTCH COPPER PIPE. Hmmm, maybe it is a smoking pipe.

George, I'm hoping the copper piece can be identified as a pipe bowl as it will be a wonderful rare find. But, as a descendent of old Cherokee county moonshiners, it really looks like still to me.
Regardless, you dig some awesome stuff.
Any little silver or gold makes my day and to even gain permission to that site? Wow.
God bless, Al

Outstanding collection of relics George, is that an eagle facing right on the sporting button? The pipe is definitely an interesting relic and the opium explanation seems plausible...oh and silver is just icing :laughing7:

Thanks Jon,
Yes, it is. Thought it could of been a Civil war one. Still a neat find. Never seen one like that before.

I want to thank everyone for the info on the pipe/still/musket powder/candle stuffer. Lol
Geuss will never know?
Definitely a cool find, conversion piece...

Very well done Vino. That SLQ is really nice, and the flower button is awesome.

The only thing that I don't like... is the fact that I am not there with you guys!

Your copper pipe thing looks like a candle snuffer from church. Would have had a handle out the little side. Just my thoughts. Happy hunting.

George if there's a residue build up left in the bowl, scrape it out and get it tested to what it is actually, it's a sure way of finding out what it wasn't used for. Just a thought of narrowing down the use of the item, still it's make for a great display item in the case.

Great finds Vino. They own you big time. Not as much history in this area. They would be hard pressed to return they favor. Once Steve comes back he states its boring to hunt here compared to there. Spoiling them for sure.

Well I throw my guess in then...

The first Philly crack pipe? But seriously if there's a hole going through from the bowl to the stem I don't see why a snuffer would be built that way. If it were a still-top I would figure on some good brazed connections which I don't really see either.

That's a nice pile of silver coins, Vino! But those buttons tell me you are just scratching the surface at that site.... :)
