Good ID, it appears to be the type for making candy, right?

Yes Ben, this looks like it goes beyond 140 degrees.
Most wall thermometers top at 120, with some at 130 and 140.
Candy thermometer seems like a likely possibility.

Just looked at it again, it was bent at the top and when I bent it back you could see the word "oils" very clearly (there may be one letter before it but I'm not sure, it's hard to see). Maybe it's "boils". Either way I'm thinking maybe deep frying type.
