I found a piece of raw copper while excaving a new home 300nfeet off pewaukee lake in wisconsin. It was bright green about 5 feet down on the side of a hill in a layer of clay. This piece wieghs about 20 lbs and is rather flat. My boss said it could possibly be a meteor?? Is there any way to test it?? Can i post a picture?? IMG_20140312_224409.jpgIMG_20140312_224344.jpg

I can't offer any insight, but I'm guessing the first request will be for a picture... copper is weird for a meteorite though. What makes you say it's copper?

sounds like a natural copper nugget. I believe they are a fairly common find in that area

Just posted pics to origonal IMG_20140312_225615.jpg

copper

Is it magnetic? Most meteorites are magnetic, even if only slightly magnetic. Find a strong magnet and see if it passes that test. Pure copper is not magnetic, but your rock probably has other metals in it. So that test may not prove much. But let's take it one test at a time!
