Looks like a familiar pattern I've seen,I'll bet someone will ID it soon.My buddy found this today detecting a 1700's farm field. We've been to this spot many times with the oldest find being a 1730 KG2. It's light weight thin copper. Any ideas what it may be and how old it is? Thanks!

Yes, it is a pre-civil-war beltplate. The book "American Military Belt Plates" by O'Donnell & Campbell calls it a "Common Militia Plate," dating from the 1810s through 1830s. That book shows dozens of variations, starting on page 107. No offense, but yours is damaged and still has too much encrustation on it for me to be able to tell which variety you found.
I found one site ( Civil War Insignia ) that calls it a New York Militia officer's sword belt plate, stamped brass version
