I found this extremely worn copper disk earlier this summer. Haven't really been able to see any detail on it but tonight I was looking at it in a certain light and thought I might see a partial date. My eyes aren't that good and I think they might be playing tricks on me...can anyone make out a date on this coin or is it completely hopeless?

try a scan or a pic from directly over the disc/coin. Then... don't put writting on it!

Maybe someone will see something but not from an angle like that.

Any pics I took from directly over the coin produce absolutely no detail. I dont have a scanner, and the possible date I see is below the writing on the coin...but like I said, my eyes are not that good and maybe I'm just seeing things. Thank you and HH.

I know nic-a-date brings the details out on nickles... maybe someone in the coin forum knows of something that will help with coppers?

the trick with a magnet and iron filings sometimes reveals details long gone but it is only for stamped items not carved. sometimes works on non magnetics. (works great to get serials off filed off guns too) sprinkle iron filings on to the surface holding level so they dont fall off and slowly run circles behind the item with the magnet. bring the magnet closer and closer until details settle. the filings will follow the structure of the striking as the matrix of the metal was permanently disturbed by the striking. (again...sometimes works)

That's a really neat trick-I've got a few coins that were given to me that I'm going to try that on..thanks, McGyver!!

Thanks for trying guys. I think I was just seeing things. The light was playing tricks on me. I'll just mark it down in the 1793 chain cent column.

I see a 78. I'd think an 1878 would be easy to read.

1878 would be too new for a large cent. Maybe the 78 is in the middle of the date and its a 1780's era colonial......wishful thinking. Thanks for looking.

I didn't want to say 1778, but since you did. The 78 is plain to see if you asked me.

To get the date back you must use a little acid on it.If cleaning it is unsucessful.I think I see 1842?

Standing back from my moniter...looks like the letter U dead center on the bottom...about all I can make out, but it looks pretty clear as a U.
