Snuffer is a great idea...

I was thinking it was a dagger sheath tip.

Is there a small one or two by the opening?

Is there a place where a rod may have attached?

no numbers on it, the only markings are the decorative lines around the middle!

there is a tiny weld on it just under the ball but that is on the seem to keep it together i think :icon_scratch:

the ball is separate and is crimped over the tip but fairly loosely as it moves!

thanks shaun

completely hollow?
what about the ball, is it threaded ( on the inside)?

yes its hollow and so is the ball! no thread just loosely crimped over the tip!

Hi Shaun, found this post OK....

Finial, dagger sheath tip, candle snuffer; All three good ideas for sure. Hmmm.. Take the darn thing Shaun and look very carefully at it, maybe with a magnetifing glass. Look for some places where something could have been attached to it, even by the ball on top, could something have been attached there. Look for scratches or holes. Try to look on the inside, what is the condition, do you see coloring or something. What did you see when you cleaned it and removed the gunk?

I have an other idea, although all three given are pretty darn good. Could be it for sure. But let us know what you think about it. What did Cru think about it? (have not looked too carefully at all the posts, but you know why don't you... still in my chair though....)

i've looked at it over and over and all there is is a tiny spot under the ball plus the engraved lines around the middle!
not sure it was originally a cone now though! maybe not as squashed as i thought :icon_scratch:

In one the first messages you mentioned that the ball was loose, not really attached, just crimped on the cone. That is then not such a strong point for a sheath tip, or snuffer, athought for the last it would not have to be of a very sturdy constuction like for a Sheath tip I would imagine. This is one of those things that is fairly common, and can be several things. The point is that we don't know how it was attached to something else; so was it something used alone. Maybe a candle snuffer as an apart item. The most that I know of have a stick or metal shaft where they are connected to the cone, but without some sort of idea about an attachment point....... That your not entirely sure that is WAS a cone makes it also a bit more difficult.

Relic dude, do you know what your found item was? Are there attachment points?

no woody, no attachment points! and i'm now pretty sure it was not a cone!
looking at the overlap on the seem, if it was once a cone then the overlap would be greater at the bottom than the top! if you know what i mean :icon_scratch:
if it were to be opened out to a cone then the bottom pieces would not meet up! also the lines on it match as it is!

thanks relicdude, what is it you think they are? yours does look very similar :icon_scratch:

Hi shaun,Are the types of fish in the rivers in England active at dusk and dawn.Fish like redfin perch, tench and carp. Before the sun comes up and after dark it would be a good idea too see where ones was going.Hard to bait a hook or set a trap in the dark. The shape looks more like a candle-suffer.Seems the peasants where poaching fish from the local lords river.I could only image a PIK from from scotland jumping into a river with a dagger to kill fish lol.

interesting find and thanks for sharing
