After just graduating from university I went back home to whereI grew up. I asked the owners of a 1700s farmstead if I could hunt their property and they said yes. I’ve been there 4-5 times before but not really found anything cool (some late 1800s silver only). Today I hit the jackpot. On the lawn just 4 inches down was this BEAUTIFUL 1 Daler SM 1718 Mercury. These were minted during the end of the great nordic war 1715-1718 to fund Charles XII of Sweden and his war against Norway. Each year haf different designs. ALL coinage of Sweden was turned in to the crown (silver and copper) and these coins replaced them. The denomination is 1 Daler SM. SM stands for silver coin. These were supposed to be good for a silver daler. Of course the king let too many to be minted which caused these to tank down in value (millions after millions). This design depicts Mercury and was minted in December of 1718. The king died a month before, in November, in Norway.
I also found a 1/4 Öre Kristina minted in 1650. Did you know we Swedes had a colony in Delaware called New Sweden by that time? One settlement was fort Kristina. These coppers give amazing signals on the AT pro - around 85-86. The C R S stands for Christina Regina Suecia and on the other side you see 1650 and the crest of the Vasa dynasty. Christina was the last Vasa and she abdicated in 1654.
