Found this while metal detecting on an abandoned railroad track that was torn up in the 1940s. I believe somebody tossed this off a train into the weedy area where we found it. I was told that it was from the 1860s, but I don't know if that is 100% true. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this kind of bottle? It does not have any writing on it, but it was a nice addition to my collection.

Could you try and take a clear picture of the top, then the whole thing, and the bottom? But from the top it looks like an applied taper, which would most likely be 1840's to 1870's.

I will post some more, thanks for the info

I heard this could be an old whiskey bottle is that possible?

Hello metaldetecta,

Welcome to the TNet basement, and thanks for showing us your bottle. I'd think it's post 1865 to the late 1870's, as I believe I'm seeing a key mold base seam. Either that or a post mold, IMO.

Was this a surface find? I believe I'd be inclined to return to that spot with shovel & scratchers for a more serious exploration...
