Email from button expert..I now have an ID!!!

Hi Wayne

It is indeed British and to an unusual unit.

Raised in 1798 the 96th (Queens Own) Regiment of Foot was known as the Minorca Regiment, they became the Queens Germans in 1801 and were renumbered as the 97th in 1805. They kept this number and name until 1816 so we can accurately date yours 1805-1816.

I am completely updating the Regt of Foot section on my website over the next few months, so would be grateful if I could add this one as it doesnt turn up often and is a nice find.

Hope that helps
Steve

Told you.

Of benefit to both parties - you & him.

Great to see that you have a accurate ID, and it'll be a great looking piece in the display case. Congratulations

I read your description and thought in my head exactly what the consensus now is! Great button man! Beauty find

Steve

Wow! Nice piece of history there.
You sure are doing well Waynos!

was I right or what ? - 1798 -the former "96th--""german speaking" Minorca regiment-- called "the queens own germans" in 1801 --renumbered the 97th in 1805 ..... took part in the war of 1812 --in the upper Canada area -- * the button had to come from that time frame 1805 / 1816 * --the only time they were in the area was during the war of 1812 era time frame in the upper Canada * --New Hampshire forces fought in that area -- so the button would have either had to come off a "prisoners uniform" brought back to New Hampshire or as a bring back "trophy" item by a local soldier..who went to Canada and fought there... now you know its history about as well as you can...
