Cool button

Found a cool button in the dark swinging my way back to my car.
Says "R. Queens Own" and has what looks like a 97 in the middle
It's about 5/8 in diameter

Wondering if I can find out what the history on this button is

Id def say British.
Possibly British 97th Regt of Foot.

british for sure .... the 97th "R"egiment of foot -- the "queens own" GERMANS ...brought into the british army in 1804 ... renumbered the 96th in 1816 ...so the button is from the 1804 to 1816 era -- so likely a war of 1812 item...

Yes, its shouts early 1800s, so fits that history in my mind.

the British "foreign" 97th Regiment of foot -- aka as " the queen's own germans" was a unit raised in 1798 from German speaking Minorcian's (a former Spanish colony taken over by Britian in the med ) it existed from 1798 to 1818....they took part in the upper Canadian area fighting during the war of 1812 ... New Hampshire provided troops during the war , likely it was a button took as a prize off of a enemy uniform by a new Hampshire soldier later on lost somehow..

It is indeed British and to an unusual unit.

Raised in 1798 the 96th (Queens Own) Regiment of Foot was known as the Minorca Regiment, they became the Queens Germans in 1801 and were renumbered as the 97th in 1805. They kept this number and name until 1816 so we can accurately date yours 1805-1816.

I am completely updating the Regt of Foot section on my website over the next few months, so would be grateful if I could add this one as it doesnt turn up often and is a nice find.

Strange thing is I found it in a local cornfield.
This field has produced many buttons and a few thimbles..wondering if a seamstress had a house in that area way back when.
