Hi...first post here,
I live in London and occasionally mudlark on the Thames foreshore. This Sunday I found a button emerging from the mud and it's been confirmed as a Continental Army button. As far as I can tell it is in very good condition (anaerobic mud) and better preserved than many I have seen on the internet from battlefield soil. I have no attachment to it so will be selling it soon. i thought you might like to see the photos.
Very best,

M

That one is a beauty. No doubt one of the redcoats brought it back with them.

Gorgeous! Best dug example I've seen! Always wanted to mudlark on the Thames. I will be in London's this November, but I think there's a permit required?

Fantastic example, congratulations! :occasion14:

Yes from the London Port Authority (LPA)

Are you a mudlark or a standard permit holder?:hello:

PS. Very nice condition, not sure why you want to sell it though. (but I know its your choice)

Those mud pewters always hold up exceptionally well. The condition is outstanding and should fetch you quite a few quid.

Congrats!!!!!!

ones in poor shape can go for $300+ over here - wtg

How many "USA" buttons have been found in the UK ?? Safe to say it is a very rare find outside of North America. I'd be very hard pressed to part with it. But then again, I am hard pressed to part with all my dug relics.

Great find! Congrats.

Very, very rare find outside of the US.

Although it has a story connected to military service, does finding it in the UK, make it more or less valuable?

That would probably depend on the buyer.

My guess is that the condition of this pewter will command a high price regardless of the location found. Quite honestly the likelihood that it was brought back by a British soldier may be very attractive to some. Just my very unprofessional thoughts

This is why I opened the debate, I have no strong opinion other than its history is a little weak & like you state the condition is so good, maybe someone wanting the best will pay a premium. Although an Export Licence is required by EU Law as its over 100 years old. (Our Law is actually 50 years, so very confusing)

Very cool find of the Continental button.

I don't know if finding it in the UK makes it any more valuable, but it certainly makes it way more interesting !

Possible POW's button. Ethan Allen and other captured Americans were transported to London for the full "British Treatment". Nice button find, and I hope you get a good price for it.
