"The year on the tombstone reads 1805;
it says that he died by the gun.
On a cool desert evening in New Mexico;
a prairie of shadows and stones.
The coyotes howl in the mournful wind;
his lonesome story is told.
He longs to ride and be free again;
not owing the Devil his soul.
And the legend lives on.
Let's sing a song for him now boys;
as he lays in his stony grave.
Let's drink one more round for our friend in the ground.
The gunfighter's gone but his legend remains."

hint - flipside of a very popular song

Then like flowers in summer it grows
And then fades away in the winter

"Ghost Riders in the Sky," recorded by dozens of C&W artists.

Okay, let's see how long it takes some other Paleozoic survivor to nail this one. (No fair Googling! :D )

"I've tried time and time again.
"We end up as nothin' but friends..."

"Side by Side," recorded by beaucoups of pop and big band duos.

Eric Clapton a Certain Girl.

It was more of " a while ago" than you know! ::)

Long before Clapton capably covered it, it was a classic "New Orleans Sound" R&B hit for Ernie K Doe of "Mother-in-Law" fame.

Now, then.... who'll step up and ID this easy one?

"Fly the ocean in a silver plane.
"Watch the jungle when it's wet with rain..."

Maxine, Patty, and Laverne— the Andrews Sisters— "Don't Sit under the Apple Tree..." :wink:

Come on PBK I thought you would have this one already!!!

Guess I'll have to holler "uncle" to you and your great-uncle, too! (Of course, there's always Google... ::))

As for the others... well, many years ago I worked in radio, so maybe that gives me a bit of an edge. After all, if you hear a song long enough, the lyrics tend to burn in after a while!
