he said to me he found bits of cloth with gold braid --on it -- they work like this the two parts upper and lower clip into one another -- one "end" is fitted together --then the lower end is slid under a cloth loop that is sewn to the shirt then a rank tube is shoved down on the upper barpart ( think of a tube sock with gold braid running around it and with no enclosed toe part) -- then the lower bar is lowered and it is clipped shut and the rank tube is adjusted covering the works . -- it was a pain to use and easily gave up the fact you were an officer (thus prime target) to enemy sharp shooters if near a front line -- only rear type personel would be fool enough to use this type of gear.
officers were the "prime" target of civil war snipers .
even in Vietnam -- going in the bush -- officers had a small white stripe on the rear of their helmets (so they could be ided from the rear only) most officers stripped their "collar devices" and you never ever saluted an officer in the bush * (unless you wanted to get him shot ) and maybe yourself as well.
Vietnam enemy snipers "hit list" -- hit radioman or officer first (to cut comms and stop help artty / air support and remove leadership) --then take out the heavy weapons --ie M60 gunner (remove main counter threat to them)-- since heavy weapons took a few seconds to get ready most of the time -- it was radioman and officers first .
