Detecting can be a mind game. The other day I went to an old site only to find it plowed into a drainage ditch. Figuring on a few finds hanging about I went there with my two kids to slog around in some mud

So we got to work with some washed out surface finds consisting of some ceramic buttons and pottery.

Next we got into a really nice turquoise and paste brooch that, judging from the gilt in a couple sockets, recently lost some jewels by means of a bulldozer.

Still, an outstanding find in my book, and probably dating to the late 18th/early 19th century. I could find any picture examples except for a short text description in the Carolyn White book.

We dug a few flat buttons and a couple two piece buttons including a script “I” button which I put aside thinking it a late-English import and didn’t give much thought….until I cleaned it up. Turns out to be a Confederate Infantry button! Amazing considering it was pulled out of Northeastern soil!

All this just goes to show that when life gives you a depressing muddy water ditch, don’t make lemonade with the water. Detect it! Hahahaha.
