I went back to our spot before the big freeze to fill in any dirt that had settled in the last few weeks, and to make sure the area was all cleaned up early in case we have a snowy March and the farmer wants to plant early. Not really likely, but since my rear is growing into the couch, and it was going to be in the 40's, a major heat wave, I decided to head out.

I spent an hour and a half filling in holes, doing a few more dig test holes, moving rocks and generally making sure everything at the site was ship shape.

I then moved to the north side of the site and started to dig. I got a few keepers.

A nice CW period buckle in iron. IMG_2606.JPG

More CW period pottery. IMG_2608.JPGIMG_2612.JPG

What I believe is a Confederate spout made from lead for a canteen. It was found on a Confederate position.IMG_2610.JPG

Several porcelain buttons and a clay marble. IMG_2607.JPG

A bullet, which I will have to research. It has been fired and has a flat base.IMG_2609.JPG

Now frankly I like the canteen spout, assuming that is what it is, the best.

I did get one coin, they are hard to get here. An 1864 Indian Cent, lost the year it was made. It should clean up nicely. I haven't done anything to it yet.IMG_2611.JPG

Nice finds Smokey. Interesting bullet, like the canteen spot.

Great finds..I'd like to travel and find some relics 1 day. Australia is still a not so long ago settled country, so to find anything is very lucky. Keep up the hunt!

Good finds!! The early Indians are rare around here. Filling your holes is a plus for all of us!! I've ask to detect at places where "slobs" have been before me and get a big NO before I can get the words out!!

Tony in SC, this is a pretty major endeavor by three of us. It's not just a simple matter of filling a hole, which we always do immediately, but think more of digging out a house foundation, moving all the rubble out of the farmer's field with his permission then leveling the whole place. By hand.

Liking the little 2 hole greyish/blue button, haven't dug anything like that before. The last porcelain button I almost got the Sussex nabbed it before I could-:laughing7:-hence the name"Buttons".
The pottery looks older for some reason, the one piece with the writing might ID the period. Looks like "Indian jar" written on it, hard to tell though by the pic.
Gee there's a research project for ya Smokey during the down time from detecting.

Regarding the pottery all is just pre Civil War- nothing earlier than maybe 1820. The feather edge design was used earlier, but it was on a creamware base. This is a stoneware base, just like we use today.

Nice work Smoke... I really enjoy seeing and reading your posts. The canteen spout is another one of those little things that I wouldn’t have ever thought about. Was it broken off or was it attached and than lost somehow?
Bullets, buttons, table wares are easy for me to predict. I still have them, need them, use them everyday without giving much thought about.
To me, that spout is one of those parts that everybody had back than, really doesn’t mean much, who could have thought much about it? But today it seems so personal and almost a one off piece that is really another over the top treasures that you found.

Fat, it is made of lead and apparently was set into something, most likely wood. I have bottles of that period and don't think a self respecting homeowner would have one like that for common household use. The people who lived here had some money, but certainly not a mansion. We found silver thimbles and cufflinks in the area near where the house stood, and it had a fine mortared stone foundation. Which is now a pain to move! The Indian head cent is cleaning up nicely.

Smokey congratulations I love seeing you recovering all that history

up here we call that pottery - flow blue and flow green - you see that in a farm field - pound it good
continued good luck :icon_thumright:

Very cool, Smokey. I don't know why, but I love seeing posts with pottery. Love everything you found in this post, really.
