This button belongs to my father and he has always been told it is a Union button. When I researched it, I'm now thinking it's a Confederate button. What do y'all think? I'm having a hard time reading the back! This is what Im making out, "WATEB?? ?? ????ON 60". Doesn't make sense but that's what eyes are telling me!

It probably says Waterbury. Waterbury CT is where Scovill and a bunch of other Brass companies existed for a long time. Most of the buttons found on this site are from here.

Really! So this would be union? It came off a confederate steamer called The Dew Drop. It was headed to Vicksburg, MS to drop off supplies until it caught wind of Union Ships Petrel, Forrest Rose and Linden. It tried to hide in the Quiver River but Col. Walker's forces burned it. My father's best friend owns the property were the ship was discovered. He gave this button along with bullets and a letter of Authenticity to my father. He told my father the button is Union. Just making sure.

Hey bbheigle,

I'd listen to Dear ole Dad, on this one. I believe it's a Federal general service button, manufactured by the Waterbury Button Co. What appears Confederate about it?

Oh great!!!!!! Dad is so right! Thanks Surf!!!

My fathers's friend said this was a Confederate Button button but I can't see any writing or image on it. This also came from the Dew Drop.

Your first button is Union, and your second is an early coin type that was civilian which yea,any Confederate troop could have used, but it wasnt made for Military use..

I do wonder...given the desperate times the Confederacy was met with,if they did use a discarded or looted Union Jacket?I sure would stronly assume, they did

They surely did... jackets, boots. or whatever they could get their hands on. The rebels would also go in to a camp site after the union left and take what they could.
