I've never seen a two piece button 'front' quite like that.

I wonder if it's the front to a button cover similar to this one:

This one is a Great Northern RR button. I believe these are early 20th C.

I don't understand what I'm seeing there, Matt. Is that a plastic/glass button with a brass cover?

It is.

Here is another without a button inside:

Do a search on "railroad button cover" and you'll see other examples.
Interesting. I didn't know those were a "thing".

I don't know about the first one you posted, but the more recent one is a stamped shell... you can see the inverse of the stamping on the inside in the photo of the back. Mine is flat inside... as if the button is cast of solid brass.

I'm thinking this is the front of a pair of overalls button, I've never seen a design like this before though. :icon_scratch:
There's little evidence of the back portion, which makes me think it became detached while the user was wearing it.

There were many different variations of overall buttons, I'm thinking that yours is one of them.

Certainly a possibility, but this one has gilding on it, and is cast, not stamped. Did they really make coverall buttons with that level of quality?

Cool picture, by the way. Is that from your own collection, or did you find it online somewhere? I like the picture of overalls in the background.
