The "thing" at the top of the photo seems to be a lead cased epoxy tube and from my quick research may be from the 40's. The word on the cap is "DEVOE" and the stamped letters around the collar are "Devoe & Raynolds" Here is a closer look. Anyone ever seen one before or have any thoughts?

my bet is that its a paint tube frum an artist painting a picture, overlooking the river?
