I searched a former homesite in the woods yesterday. I found several buttons, including one with a bit of thread remaining. I was running low on time when I got a strong high tone with a VDI in the low 20s on the Equinox. I dug the hole and out popped a complete shoe buckle. The tongue/chape is similar to xii in the buckle chart, so it is c1660s - 1790s (big range). I am thinking mid to late 1700s based on my other finds there. Happy hunting and good luck out there.

What a great find! Keep it up!

Love the shoe buckle! My favorite Colonial relic to find. I have not gotten one with the Nox yet so I'm glad you posted the VDI number. I would have expected it to be higher. Congrats!
Thanks! I was pretty sure it rang up as a 22 on the stock coil of the Equinox. I just air tested it now, but with the small coil, and it was 23. It does seem the VDI should have been higher. I love these buckles too.
