I searched a former homesite in the woods yesterday. I found several buttons, including one with a bit of thread remaining. I was running low on time when I got a strong high tone with a VDI in the low 20s on the Equinox. I dug the hole and out popped a complete shoe buckle. The tongue/chape is similar to xii in the buckle chart, so it is c1660s - 1790s (big range). I am thinking mid to late 1700s based on my other finds there. Happy hunting and good luck out there.

Very Cool!!! Congrats!!!

That's amazing! What are the inner workings made from? Are they iron? Looks to me like the same material as the buckle. Crazy awesome find!

Nice recovery on the buckle, it'll look great in the display. Congrats
Thanks! I have been lucky enough to find five or six of these buckles over the last five years. I hope to make a dedicated display box for them if I ever find the time.

Thanks! I am thinking the inner workings are brass, but I am not sure. If they were iron, I suspect they would have rusted away by now.

Finding a complete colonial era shoe buckle is FANTASTIC!!!!!! Great job lenmac65. We are blessed to live in a part of the country where these types of finds are possible. Big congrats!
Thanks! Blessed we are. I know you have found a lot of nice buckles too. These type of buckles are among my favorite things to find. Nice to see the snow gone. Hopefully we don’t get a lot this week. Good luck out there.
