Hit a Colonial site today with my girlfriend that's been hunted many times. Dug every target there. Not much in the way of coins, just a clad quarter and Indian (haven't got a date off it yet) That religious medal is given to Boy Scouts I believe. That little disc, which I thought was a button until I got home says" DB Smith & Co NY Disc No. 51." I'm assuming it has something to do with electronics. I found 2 more musketballs but I left them in the tub while I was taking pictures.

Not too sure on that circular thingy. I've found a few things like that lately at some older sites. And is that an old barrette?

Now that button has got my curious. The design on the back is interesting. The site had activity that I know from at least the late 1600's. I'm hoping a button expert can help me out here.

Button dates well into the 1800s but with history like that anything could pop up.

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me how you determined that? I really need to get myself a nice book on buttons or something.

Buttons are dated two ways, their construction, or a makers mark. Pretty much anything you find that is a "2 piece" will date into the 1800s. What we consider as the early ones in North America are the flat buttons.
